Common Core State Standards for Grade 8 The Number System • Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers. Expressions and Equations • Work with radicals and integer exponents. • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. • Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. Functions • Define, evaluate, and compare functions. • Use functions to model relationships between quantities. Geometry • Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and sphere. Statistics and Probability • Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.
Common Core State Standard for Mathematical Practices Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Homework Procedures • PURPOSE:Homework assignments are an extension of class activities and should be considered practice to ready students for quizzes and tests. • MUST BE DONE per INSTRUCTIONS or it will not be accepted. • Homework will be checked on a daily basis. It will be graded in class and will occasionally be turned in to be graded by the teacher. Full name and period number should be in the top right hand corner. • Homework quizzes will come directly from homework. Students should correct homework and study it daily. • TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR A COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT, AN ATTEMPT SHOWING WORK MUST BE COMPLETED FOR EACH PROBLEM. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE SPENDING HOURS COMPLETING HOMEWORK.
Incomplete, Late, or Absent Work INCOMPLETE/LATE WORK: • Incomplete / Late work for full credit will be accepted up until the day of the Unit Test. Math is a content area that builds on itself, and therefore the 8th grade Math Department does not follow the Del Webb late work policy. We make provisions to give students the opportunity for success and future understanding. If students begin having late work continually, this privilege may be taken away and citizenship will be lowered. MAKEUP WORK: • When students are absent, they are expected to turn in any work within 3 days from the date they return. But keep in mind, the math curriculum builds so turning in work as soon as possible is the most advantageous to the learning process.
Test Review Corrections Pre-Algebra Test Review Corrections You must turn in your original Test Review, stapled to the Test Review corrections . On ONE SIDE of a piece of paper: (2 problems to be corrected, DO NOT WRITE MORE THAN TWO PROBLEMS CORRECTED PER SIDE OF A PIECE OF PAPER). IF YOU WRITE MORE THAN TWO PROBLEMS PER SIDE, THERE WILL BE NO CREDIT GIVEN. If it takes a full page for one problem that is OK, put the next problem on the back side. DO NOT TRY TO CRUNCH IT IN ON THAT SIDE OF THE PAPER. Copythe original problem (including all the words) and all your work. Copy pictures only if necessary because you showed your work on it. Circle your mistake in the problem in a colored pen or pencil. Work the problem correctly, showing all your new work. Explain the following using a bulleted list or label A, B, C. A. Explain your error. What did you do wrong? B. Explain how you corrected it in the new work. Explain mathematically how you corrected it. Be specific. C. Explain mathematically each step of the rest of the problem and state the new answer as if you were teaching it to somebody and why it is correct. *Completing Test Review Corrections successfully is required in order to be permitted to take the UNIT TEST.
Grading Policy Grading: The number of points available may vary from term to term. Points will be earned from the following scale: APPROXIMATELY Unit Tests/Assessments (50%) OF GRADE Quizzes(25%) OF GRADE Homework/Participation(10%) OF GRADE Daily Skills (10%) OF GRADE Notes (5%) OF GRADE Grades will be assigned according to district guidelines: A at least 90% of total points B at least 80% of total points C at least 70% of total points D at least 60% of total points F less than 60% of total points
Extra Help The 8th grade math department has created a schedule to help students before and after school. Before school hours are from 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Students must get a pass from their teacher the day before in order to enter the halls before school. After school hours from 3:25 p.m. – 4:25 p.m. All students are welcome to attend any or all days. Late buses are provided for students who are zoned for bus service. Extra Help Schedule is subject to change due to teachers’ availability.
