There are two things Motion Study Time Study Method Study …
Motion study … • There is a lot of man-power in garment industry • Everybody is dependent on someone else • Difference in motion level of operators will directly effect the time value • Work results are dependent on Consistency, Work SpeedandTime Wastage
Motion study … Improvement in motion ~ Time wastage Time wastage ~ Production Production ~ Productivity Productivity ~ Profit Profit ~ Prosperity • Therefore Improvement in motion ~ Prosperity
Why motion study? • To determine the optimum work • To standardize the work • To train the workers • To manage the work
How to Analyze? • There may be four methods • Inspection by listening • Direct observation • Conducting VTD • PTS
1- Inspection by listening … • Inspection is performed by listening the opinion of operators and supervisors • USES: • To grasp the outline of work prior to making the observation • To support any insufficient point of observation • To inspect special/irregular work
2- Direct observation … • This is the most commonly used method. Steps involved are as follows • Determine the target work • Process which produces a high proportion of defects, Process which uses expensive equipment etc • Prepare an inspection form • Enter the items of inspection on inspection form • Draw up an action improvement plan • Determine a new working method
3- Conducting VTD • VTD stands for Video Type Discussion. It has been proven to be very effective • You can show a video of inefficient work to make operators realize their negligence • You can show a video of improved work for training purpose • Videos can be used as standards for reference purpose
4- PTS … • PTS stands for Pre-determined Time Standards. We can determine working standards before starting actual work
Advantages of PTS … • Rating is eliminated when setting the standard time • The work plan can be checked on the basis of numerical data before starting work • Since we have a very detailed data so it will be effective for short cycles • No stop watch is required
Disadvantages of PTS … • To learn how to use this method, special training and appropriate skills are required • A detailed analysis requires a great deal of time • The time required for machine work needs to be measured separately
MTM (Method’s Time measurement… • “A system of pre-determined time values used to analyze manual operation and where a time value is assigned to each motion determined by the nature of the said motion and the conditions under which it is performed”
MTM … • Units used for the MTM 1TMU (Time Measurement Unit) = 0.00001 hr 1TMU (Time Measurement Unit) = 0.0006 min 1TMU (Time Measurement Unit) = 0.036 sec 1 second = 27.8 TMU 1 minute = 1,667 TMU 1 hour = 100,000 TMU
