B. The Battle of Trenton • Washington’s men=low moralleaving after enlistment period is up • Needs victory to keep them from going home • Washington leaves campfires burning & leads men across Del. R during a storm on X-mas night to Trenton • Trenton held by Hessians • Surprised the Hessians w/ attack on X-mas day • Against battle code/sleeping because of Xmas celebration/storm • AMERICAN VICTORYre-enlistment of soldiers & survival of Continental Army
C. Fight for Philadelphia • Gen. Howe (GB) decides to take the American capital of Philadelphia • Successful and sets up camp w/ the loyalist supporters
D. Victory at Saratoga • Gen. Burgoyne (GB) plans to march from Canada to Albany and join forces with Howe to isolate NE • Encounters resistence on the way & short food supplies which leaves them vulnerable • Howe busy in Philly and is late to meet up with Howe • American troops surround Burgoyne at SaratogaBurgoyne surrenders • Gb now change strat to keep soldiers close to their cannons and boats
E. A Turning Point • VICTORY AT SARATOGA= TURNING POINT • French agree to support the Americans
