TOK – The Arts Introduction – What is Art?
The Arts • What is Art? • How do we judge Art? • Analysing Art and Discussing Art • Why is Art important? • Does Art reflect the Real World?
Starter • You will be shown two pieces of Art on the following slides. For each, you should: • Decide whether you think it classifies as Art • Explain your reasons (what factors you considered when judging whether or not it was a piece of Art?)
What factors do we consider? • Make a list of all the different ‘factors’ we used to judge whether something was Art or not • Read the list of ‘ideas’ from last year – which is the most important in deciding what Art is? • Read the extract from Lagemaat’s Chapter on The Arts • Which do you think is the most important reason of the three (intention, quality or audience reception)?
What is Art? • You will now be shown a series of slides that claim to be ‘Art’. For each: • Decide how it could be considered to be Art • Decide how it could considered to NOT be Art • Form your judgement as to whether it is Art or not
