The Link to Books Program • The Link to Reading Activity of the Services to Youth Facet of The Triangle Park Chapter of Links, Incorporated was initiated in the North Carolina area in the fiscal year 2004 -2005. The original intent was to purchase at least ten books each for twenty select children in each of three counties – Durham, Orange and Wake. • This fiscal year 2005 – 2006, our population and area has expanded at the request of the participants and Triangle Park Chapter members. Today, we are serving 120 to 150 select children in five counties. Our Services to Youth Facet Members facilitate the arrangements, assemble the distribution packet and prepare and lead the reading sessions at each site. • The volunteer members of the Services to Youth Facet: (1) Deliver the books to the children. (2) Read to them. (3) Teach them how to record authors and titles. (4) Model how books may be stored in given container in alphabetical order by author’s last name. (5) Demonstrate how to issue and receive books to and from family members in a library manner. The children are also taught how to read to younger children, how to request others to read to them and how to enjoy reading by themselves. They are encouraged to engage the whole family in their reading time. • The books are delivered once a month during the week following the Triangle Park Chapter’s second Saturday meeting. The book selection is appropriate for public school population levels 2 – 4. In addition to the five books already distributed, children have been given pencils, a Webster Dictionary, a United States Map jigsaw puzzle and bookmarks. • Our participants are served at four school sites and one after school church site in Durham, Franklin, Orange, Sampson and Wake counties. We are a support group and volunteer at the invitation of teachers and individuals responsible for children.
