  2. What is a symbol? • A symbol is a person, place, a thing, or an event used to represent something else: the dove is a symbol of peace. Characters in literature are often symbols of good or evil.

  4. In order to understand how a character is a symbol, you must understand the character.

  5. Characterization • Characterization is the method an author uses to reveal or describe characters and their various personalities.

  6. What clues does the author give the reader in order to develop characterization? • Physical description • What the character does (actions) • What the character says • What the character thinks/feels • What other characters say or do to the character • When and where the character lives

  7. Your Task Today • Each group must create a timeline of the happenings in the book thus far. • Each group must finish the characterization sheets for Jack, Ralph, Piggy, & Simon • Then, we will work on the procedure of literature circle behavior
