  7. Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland DESCRIPTION Delve into elegant Frisian whitework with historical whitework specialist, Yvette Stanton. From Friesland in the Netherlands, this is a style of counted embroidery dating from the 1600s. It was traditionally used on men’s shirt collars, household linen, and samplers. What is Frisian whitework? Frisian whitework is a style of counted embroidery from Friesland, a coastal province in the north of the Netherlands. Frisian whitework usually used white linen thread on fine white evenweave linen fabric. It was used to decorate bed sheets, pillowcases, shirts, caps, bibs and handkerchiefs. The style was also extensively recorded on samplers by young girls learning to stitch. Some of the samplers feature coloured silk thread in addition to the white linen thread, and some are predominantly worked in coloured silk thread. Despite that, this is a whitework style. Discover the history of Frisian

  8. whitework, before learning the techniques and stitches that you will need to create your own fantastic pieces! Stitch your way through a collection of stunning projects including: Runner This runner features the type of band used on sheets. It has satin stitch, pulled thread stitches, cutwork and drawn thread work borders at each end. The hemstitched edge has mitred corners. Silk sampler Frisian whitework samplers were typically stitched by young girls. To alleviate the possible monotony of only stitching in white, they were o?en worked in coloured silk. This design could also be worked in white thread on white fabric. Square cushion A simple way to decorate a cushion is to work a band of embroidery down the front. Needlecase The design stitched across the middle of this needlecase is in the style of early shirt collars. The needlecase has three sections, with two on the outside, and one folding inside. There is a pocket across the whole width inside, and wool flannel for the needles across two sections. Biscornu This biscornu pincushion has a design based on the shapes, stitches and motifs that are used to make up large, decorative alphabet letters. Monogram cushion Large alphabet letters were used on sheets as highly decorative laundry markings. Make a monogram cushion with your own initials or those of someone special. Strawberries These sweet strawberries are a great way to sample a number of different styles of Frisian whitework. Round pendant Show off your embroidery every day by wearing this beautiful pendant. Worked on 40 count linen, the small scale means a lot of pattern fits into a small space.
