1. Pitch • Pitch is the highness or lowness of the sound you make. Vocal pitch varies from person to person, depending on individual differences in vocal structure. • Key is the average pitch at which you speak.
1. Pitch • Melody refers to the variations in pitch that help to give expression to a person’s voice. • a monotone is a melody that consists of only one tone.

Pitch • Inflection is the upward and downward glide of your pitch as you speak. • Rising inflection- used in communicating doubt, uncertainty, surprise, or an unfinished thought. • ex: Are you going to New York on Friday? • Falling inflection- used in communicating certainty, finality, or a completed thought. • ex: I’m going tomorrow.

2. Volume • Volume, or loudness, is the intensity of sound. Volume depends on the force exerted to produce the speech tone. • To increase loudness, you have to increase the pressure behind the column of air being forced up from the lungs through the vocal cords. The louder you want to talk, the more pressure you need. • ***Remember*** Use your diaphragm! • If you get pressure from your neck or upper chest, you will hurt your throat.
3. Rate • Rate is the speed at which you talk. • Normal speed is from about 120 to about 160 words per minute. • Rate is influenced by a number of factors, including the emotional content of the message. • link to video
4. Quality • Quality is the tone of your voice. • Your personal vocal quality is the tone that makes your voice identifiable as yours • Some people develop unpleasant qualities that can and should be changed. • The most common quality problems are: • Nasality • Breathiness • Harshness • Hoarseness
