Manufacturing Education at MIT LMP Summit October 28, 2011 • 1950’s • Metals Processing Research (MechE and Metallurgy) • 1960’s The Rise of Engineering Science; • Pressure to Eliminate Manufacturing – too applied • Late 1970’s Resurgence • Process Research and Industry Consortia • Founding of LMP • Eventually ~ 100 Graduate Students at SM and PhD Level • Mid 1980’s LMP Faculty Create • Comprehensive Graduate Classes in Manufacturing; but no specific degree
