What is ProCite? • Program that manages citations • Also known as ‘reference software’ • With ProCite, you can: • Print bibliographies and subject bibliographies • Change your bibliography styles easily • ‘Cite While You Write’: insert references as you write your papers in Word • Import records from electronic databases
What Are We Talking About? • Citations • References to any material you use for research that tell you where to find the item • Books, journal articles, etc. • Bibliographies • A listing of all citations you have used in a paper • Databases • An electronic collection of citations
Why is ProCite important? • Your assignment for this class • Saves you time and effort in your research
How Do I Get ProCite? • Computer labs: • Coutts L-110 (ProCite 5) • Rutherford 2-03 (ProCite 4) • Rutherford 2-05A (ProCite 4) • current version: ProCite 6 • Download trial version from www.procite.com • University of Alberta Microstore (under $200)
What You Need To Know • Creating databases • Add records to the database • Manually • Import records from library catalogues, electronic databases, web sites • Print bibliographies • ‘Cite While You Write’ feature

Importing Web Pages • Open internet browser to the page you are importing
Cite While You Write • Allows you to insert citations into your paper and generate a bibliography from the citations you use • Available using • Word 7, Word 97, and Word 2000 • WordPerfect 7, 8, and 9 • Use the Tools menu in Word to find ProCite commands
