This story reflects the time period because realism was based on real life situations. Back during this time (1800’s) being stranded on a boat may have been something that actually happened and something people could relate to.
Before the 1800’s, when realism didn’t exist, the stories that people wrote didn’t depict real life situations and didn’t focus on lower class people. In the story, local color is demonstrated through the way that the sailors speak. They use a lot of slang throughout such as words like, thwart, which means “a seat going across a boat, on which a rower or passenger sits. Some literary terms included personification. This is seen when the waves are personified as attacking the men on the boat. Another literary term is imagery which is seen when the author describes the men as being exhausted and how they take turns rowing the boat because they keep falling asleep.
Man vs nature is seen throughout most of the story. One example includes when the men were attempting to go South, but the wind and the waves were pushing and forcing them to go North. Another example is when they talk about how they weather was very icy and cold and they were on the coast of Florida which tends to be warm.
