The volcanic region of Campo de Calatrava is home to well-preserved volcanic cones such as the Yezosa in Almagro and the Cerro Gordo in Valenzuela de Calatrava. The Columbretes Islands are volcanic in origin. Cape Gata is the exposed tip of a submerged magma body. The Isla de Alborán is volcanic in origin. Because the Canary Islands are volcanic in origin, they are volcanic cones that are anchored on the sea floor. They represent one of the most interesting regions with active volcanoes on the planet. Significant volcanoes are the Teide, in Tenerife, and the Teneguía, in La Palma, whose eruption in 1971 was the most recent eruption in Spanish territory.
