Outcomes By the end of the lesson pupils… • MUST have an understanding of the content and methodology of producing a family tree. • SHOULD be able to produce a family tree back to their grandparents including basic information • COULD create a family tree dating back to their great-grandparents including a range of detailed information and pictures.
You will need… • A copy of the ‘Family Tree’ preparation sheet provided by your teacher • A pen • Access to ‘Stoketube’ (for ‘Heir Hunters & ‘Who do you think you are?’) At home you will need… • Your completed ‘Family Tree’ preparation sheet. • Access to a computer with Microsoft Publisher.
Why do people create their family tree? • An opportunity to show the people your family is composed of. • To create a picture of your family as a whole that shows why it's unique. • Creating an invaluable family history. • Might find a connection to a famous person or event in history. • Might be able to claim an inheritance.
Watch the clip which your teacher will show you from ‘Who do you think you are?’ and ‘Heir Hunters’ What kinds of evidence are the people in these programmes using to trace a family history? Are there any types of evidence you could use? Complete ‘Activity 1’ on your worksheet
Complete ‘Activity 2’ on your worksheet after looking at the following 2 family trees…
Now have a go at ‘Activity 3’ on your work sheet… Discuss your ideas with your partner/table.
Move onto ‘Activity 4’ to create a plan of action for your family tree. Think about who you can contact, how you can contact them and a realistic timescale – your deadline for completing the family tree is one week only!!
Remember the best source of information are the people at home! Extension activity • When you produce your family tree the more information you can add to it the more ‘useful’ it will be as a source of information to others. • Think about adding pictures, information about jobs etc. • You can alter the format of your family tree from the template you have been given, that is just to get you started.
