  10. 3-1 Corporate History3-1 Corporate History ◆The Jones Sewing Machine Company was established in 1859 by William Jones, who developed various types of special machines, but a very large portion of the factory’s production was in the field of domestic models. ◆The Brother operation in the UK began in 1959 in London. ◆Brother acquired 40% of the shares in Jones Sewing Machine Company in 1968, as a basis for marketing their range of sewing and knitting machines, typewriters, industrial sewing machines. Both companies were merged, and the operation was subsequently moved to Manchester ◆Jones became wholly owned by Brother in 1972. ◆The strength of the Jones name gave more opportunity for the successful distribution of domestic sewing machines and knitting machines. However, this inadvertently caused problems by neglecting to establish the “Brother” name during the 1970s. M&A
