Office of International Cooperation “Essential Points for New Students: A First Orientation.” By: Dira Berman, Ph.D. Coordinator of International Education & International Student Counselor Office of International Cooperation National Chengchi University diraberman@gmail.com
This Presentation Who are we? What I do for you What you can expect How to cope with our new situation How to get in touch with me & us
Who we are • We are the Office of International Cooperation (OIC). The Dean is Prof. Shu Chen. • OIC does four things: build international relations, help foreign students, manage exchange programs, planning for internationalization. • How We Can Help You: Scholarship Questions, Work Permits, Dorm Matters, Access to Language Class, Student Life Issues (logistics, making friends, etc).
What You Can Expect – Common Student Experiences -1 ? • You are not alone, but everyone is a bit different • Logistical questions – getting settled in, such as: buying books, taking the bus from dorm to class, cleaning laundry, where can I buy…? • Class questions – what courses to take, where to go? Getting help with a class. • Roommate and Food issues: “My roommate never sleeps!!” Or snores!! Where do I find beef?
What You Can Expect – Common Student Experiences -2 ? • Does it ever stop raining? It is so hot and humid! I love this weather. • Language barriers: talking to people who do not understand me. • Difficulty making friends with people from other cultures. • Scholarship questions, Work permits
What You Can Expect – Common Student Experiences -3 ? • Feeling lonely and a bit down • Experiencing academic stress and nervousness • Difficulty learning Chinese • Poor grades • Concerns about “what next for me?”
What I Can Do For YOU • I can assist solving your questions in three ways: • By providing direct assistance (individuals, groups). • By routing your question to the appropriated channel. • By helping you solve your problem or questions. • I facilitate between you, the problem and possible solutions. I can assist you to get familiar and more comfortable with your new environment and culture (culture shock?!), as well as deal with personal issues, communication problems and more.
Tips for Success • Know what you need to know – dorm’s regulations • Get the answers – don’t procrastinate • Help each other! • Eat, sleep, study, make friends • Know the OIC office!
….conclusion COMMUNICATE! COMMUNICATE! COMMUNICATE! with each other and with OIC. Inflexibility is the enemy of adaptation. I will see you again in a few weeks: mandatory group orientation. Please bring your questions, insights, compliments, complaints, and suggestions! Dr. Berman’s cell phone:09-1083-4400 We care!
