1. When it Rains it Pours Today’s Goal: • To understand how water is absorbed into the ground. • To be able to explain the difference between pervious and impervious surfaces. • To learn about watersheds and storm-water runoff.

2. When it Rains it Pours • When it rains, water can do one of three things. It can… OR Runoff Collect over the surface of the ground soak into the ground on vegetation and evaporate (Infiltration)

3. When it Rains it Pours • The rain’s ability to absorb into the ground depends on if the ground is pervious or impervious In other words, . . . Can the rain get through the surface or not?

4. When it Rains it Pours • If the ground is pervious, such as a grassy lawn, a forest, or a field, the rain can easily soak into the ground

5. When it Rains it Pours • If the ground is impervious, such as concrete driveways and sidewalks, asphalt roads and parking lots, and rooftops of houses, the rain cannot soak into the ground

6. When it Rains it Pours • When water soaks into the ground, the ground’s sand and soil act as a natural filter

7. When it Rains it Pours • When water runs over impervious surfaces, it picks up all kinds of pollution along the way

11. When it Rains it Pours Mississippi • 41% of the United States eventually drains into the Mississippi Watershed which then empties into the Gulf of Mexico That’s almost HALF of the entire United States! Wow!
