Arp Power Point The Kind of Friends We Used to Be By: Frances O’ Roark Dowell Soma Asad
About The Author • Frances was born on May 30th, 1964 • Dovey Coe was her most famous book. It had won the 2001 Edgar Award and the William Allen Award. Where I’d Like to Be was a children’s choice. Some other books were The Secret Language of Girls, and my personal favorite, The Kind of Friends We used to be • Frances was writing poetry in first and second grade. That’s when she finally knew she loved to write. But it wasn’t until she was 30 when her first book came out.
Settings • There are many settings in this story. • My personal favorite was school because many main events happened there. • The settings were- • Kate and Marylin’s school. • Marylin’s house • Kate’s house • Outside • Rhetta’s house
Characters • In this book, there were two main characters and many small characters. • Marylin was a cheerleader who thought that life could be perfect in every way possible. She thought that cheerleaders and Goths could be friends. Marylin was sweet and kind. She knew her life was perfect. • Kate on the other hand was dark sort of 7th grader. She wore black combat boots to school everyday with black pants and dark colored shirts. She played guitar to express her feelings. • But even though Kate and Marylin were totally different people, they have been best friends since preschool and wanted to keep it that way.
Plot • There were two main events in this story. • Marylin becomes and cheerleader and gets new friends which makes Kate feel left out, so Kate makes new friends too. All of Marylin’s friends are cheerleaders or are in student government. • Kate wants to play guitar so she asks an eighth grader named Flannary if Kate can borrow hers. Kate gets the guitar and learns to play it very well. She meets a guy named Mathew Holler and he plays guitar as well. Mathew and Kate become very good friends which interfere with Kate and Marylin’s friendship.
Conflict/Resolution Kate vs. Marylin >Marylin is afraid that her and Kate and her won’t be friends after 7th grade. So Marylin does everything she can for her and Kate to be friends again. First, she asks Kate to be her campaign manager. Then, she starts sitting with Kate on the bus. Finally, Marylin and Kate sing Christmas Carols together at the end of the story. This was the only major problem in the story.
Theme • The theme is being friends with somebody no matter what they look like and wear . • This theme best fits the story because at first a lot of people judge Marylin and Kate of what they wear but as the story goes on people start to be friends with them.
Personal Book Review I really enjoyed this book because it kind of had some drama in it. It’s a middle school book about girls and guys. I would recommend this book to sixth and seventh grade girls who like drama and romance. I would give The Kind of Friends We used to be 3 stars.
