Current Status of CFSR at NCAR Bob Dattore Chi-Fan Shih Steven Worley CISL Research Data Archive
Introduction RDA focused on observations/derived products to support climate/weather research ~7000 unique users each year Other reanalyses NCEP R1 and R2, NARR, 20th Century, ERA15, ERA40, ERA-Interim, JRA25 CFSR is valuable addition
Current Status Have acquired all model outputs for 1979-2009 Began downloading from NOMADS in Jan. 2010 Finished late Sep. 2010 During archival, files are scanned for content metadata, inventories
Current Status Three CFSR datasets in the RDA 6-hourly analyses/forecasts 5-day tar files (6/month); 2 GB limit Selected hourly timeseries one file/month (same as NCDC) filtered Monthly means diurnal (00, 06, 12, 18Z), regular 1-year tar files timeseries by parameter/level
Current Status “Portal” above these datasets Prominent position on our home page Links to NCEP’s CFSR web page interconnects NCEP, NCDC, NCAR
Remaining Work Finish archiving low-res 6-hourly files Documentation Obtain 2010 when available
Challenges Internet access slow, interruptions/restarts GRIB1 -> GRIB2 local timerange codes in monthly grids occasional jpeg decode errors not enough precision in GDS No direct access to original files
Access to CFSR NCAR users have direct access Centralized rotating disk connected to supercomputing and data analysis tools Web server Whole data file downloads Subsetting (since Sep./Nov.) by date, parameter, level, etc. output to GRIB2 or netCDF spatial subsetting for netCDF output
User Stats To date: 43 TB, 322 unique users 366 subset requests, 6.8 TB 298 (6.5 TB) output as netCDF (x4) Just beginning to more-widely broadcast availability News feeds, articles Access will increase
