According to Locke, what is the source of a government’s right to rule? What did people create to protect their rights? Why did his ideas influence Americans? What are “natural rights”?
New England Colonies • Middle Colonies • Southern Colonies
New England • Read pgs 37-39=to Life in the Middle Colonies • Summarize the section • Which colonies made up New England? • What was New England’s economy based on? (fishing, family, subsistence farms, and lumber mills) • What type of soil did they have? (thin and rocky soil) Was it good for farming? NO! • What type of farming did they practice? (Subsistence farming) • What industries worked well there? (fishing, lumber, making ships) • Their social life centered around? (towns) • Describe their local governments? (had town meetings, and people could all participate, elected who they wanted) • What are the characteristics of the Puritans? (very religious, hard working, no gambling-card playing, valued education) • What was the Triangular Trade? (Three way exchange of goods. New England good to The Caribbean’s got English credit slips, then gave to England for finished goods) • What was the hierarchy in the New Urban Society? (wealthy merchants, skilled artisans, inn keepers and retailers, people without skills or property, indentured servants and enslaved Africans.)
Middle Colonies • Read pgs 39-41 • Summarize the section • Which colonies made up the Middle Colonies? (Penn, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware) • There big cities were located where? (along the coast) • What type of soil did they have? (fertile soil, like the south helped them have long growing seasons) • What were some of the types of crops they grew? (rye, oats, barley, potatoes, wheat) • What was their main cash crop? (wheat) • What was the Imperial System? (based on Mercantilism=a country needed to have lots of gold and silver and they did this by having the raw goods so they could be self sufficient) • What were the Navigation Acts? (Charles II his attempt to make money off of the colonists by restricting their trade.) • Why were they a problem? (made colonists mad, tried to control them and lead to the Revolution) • Where did the Glorious Revolution take place? (England) • Why did it affect the Colonists? (gave them more rights and they supported the English Bill of rights)
Southern Colonies • Read pgs 34-36 • Summarize the section • What type of soil did they have (rich, fertile) • Which colonies made up the Southern Colonies? (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) • What was their most successful cash crop? (tobacco) • What are indentured servants? (people agreeing to work for their passage) • Describe the hierarchy? (plantation owners, landowners and small farmers, landless and tenant farmers, indentured servants and slaves) • What was Bacon’s Rebellion? (Nathaniel Bacon, first made at Natives wanted more land, then burned down Jamestown.) • Bacon’s Rebellion accelerated what and why? (slavery, less indentured servants) • English government adopted polices that encourage_________? (slavery)

Mayflower Compact Activity • Goal: Select a type of colony and form a governing document for it (Create your own document) • Pretend you are an Englishman or Englishwoman living in the late 1600s. You and a group of colonists have decided to go to America, and your duty is to form a document that your colony will be governed by. • Step 1-You must decide what type of colony it will be and determine what its purpose is.5 pts • Step 2- Next you will read the Mayflower Compact document and use this governing document as a model for forming your own. • Step3- Write your own document (ideas; who will be allowed to live there, why are you establishing a new colony, what does it offer, what laws need to be obeyed, who is the leader, ect) 10pts • Step 4- Create a poster/advertisement that will attract settlers to your colony. (why should they settle there, benefits, freedoms, ect) 5 pts
