IITGN: Strong Branding Dhiren Patel
Mission and Vision • Creating / Building – best technology institution • How? Where? When? • For whom? State, country, world • Best? Better than? • Base standard – MIT, Stanford, IIT, IISc? • Lets focus on Academic excellence only!!
Current Scenario: Trans-disciplinary?? Important new areas are trans-disciplinary. • Examples: Nano-science (chm, matl sc, phy, bio, mech, chem eng.), cognitive science (psyh, comp sc, bio, neurosc, biochem) Special problem areas acquiring disciplinary status. • Examples: energy, climate change, gene based therapeutics, sc and tech policy. Societal requirements need merging of traditional areas. • Examples: infrastructure - elec, mech, civil; urban systems - elec, mech, civil transp; systems engg - math, phy, bio, mech.
Functional boundary conditions • Areas and problems require strong interdisciplinary orientation, training • Responsive system with rapid evolutionary changes • Match societal aspirations with societal needs • Respond to individual student interests and abilities • System must be responsive to talented and motivated students • Should provide exits to students who are unable to or do not want to continue
Foundations • Learning methods • Academic framework • Collaborations • Corporate Social Responsibility
Learning methods - Building capability • Learning methods • Courses (based on need) • Project Work (Relevant to Industry, in tune with the centres of excellence) • Labs (Stress on synthesis of concepts, teamwork) • Special summer/winter courses (for basic developmental courses <technical writing, scientific ethics, performing arts…>)
Academic framework – Building competitiveness • Academic framework • Schools instead of departments (Engineering, Natural Sciences, Humanities/Social Sciences)??? • B Tech, M Tech, Ph D • Degree with minor, Degree with entrepreneurship, Super-specialization, Industry ready • Interdisciplinary • National and International exposure • Centres of excellence (E.g. Infrastructure <Power, Rail/Road/Ports, IT, Water>) • Research & Consulting
Collaborations: Global approach, Sustainable • Collaborations • With multiple countries/organizations • (Robotics – Japan, Manufacturing – Germany, Bio-med – Canada) • Exchange programs • Internships • CSR • Local services • Disaster management preparedness • Towards economic growth • Environment friendly technology • Generate capability in preservation
Professionalism • Systems engineering approach • Technical communication and soft skills • Entrepreneurship • Design • Research methodology • Technical Art
All-round Capability • Management skills • Art, culture & heritage • International relations • Law, IPR • Finance • Languages • Camps • Societal interactions for low cost solutions
Creativity and Innovation • Hands-on training • Design of experiments • Building of prototypes • Integration and fine tuning • Analysis, design, laboratory and real-life problem solving • Fundamental research
Industry Exposure • Product life cycle • Schedules and deliverables • Man-management • Economy, Energy, Efficiency • Dignity of labour • Team work • Respect for other cultures & beliefs
Focus on Problems? <current><future> • -Energy • -Infrastructure • -Geomatics • -Health • -Engg. Entrepreneurship etc.
Academic framework?? • Contact hours – 28 to 30 per week • Theory – 12-16 hrs • Lab – 12-16 hrs • No. of courses – 4 to 6 per semester • Credits – 30 or 50? • Evening lectures on Heritage/Technology /Science/Creativity etc.
Common courses • Eg. - Mathematics I (Advanced Calculus; Ordinary differential equations;Transform methods) • Mathematics II (Linear Algebra/Complex analysis/Partial differential equations/Probability) • HSS (Psychology/Indian History/International History/Political science) • Mechanics of Solids (For students of school of Mechanical Sciences) • Signals, systems and networks (School of CS/EE) • Characterization Lab. (Xrays, lasers, optical fibers, STM, Electron microscope etc.) • Mathematics Laboratory (Matlab, graphics, Mathematica)
Summary • Mission – Building an excellent technology institution • Vision – Dream without any constraints • Foundational framework – Basic and best • Roadmap – step by step approach – Realistic – don’t jump • Who will do what? – Take responsibility • Next meeting – Monitor, iterate and evolve
