  1. Writing Workshop—Refresher course Just a friendly reminder… You’ll be thankful when you get your OGT scores back!! 

  2. Proper Paragraph Format • Formula for a paper: • Introduction+Body+Conclusion • Introduction: Should introduce your idea and what you are planning to write about • Body: Could include 3-5 paragraphs (more, depending on the length) to explain/expand upon your main idea • Conclusion: Should bring closure to your paper • EVERY piece of writing you do should have those three elements!!! • Technical aspects • NEVER HAVE ONE BIG BLOCK PARAGRAPH!!! • All paragraphs should be indented (“finger rule” when hand writing)

  3. Writing Style • Formal (Papers, dissertations, presentations, scripts, etc.) • Should always be written in proper paragraph form with correct grammar, mechanics, punctuation, spelling, etc. • Informal (Letters, e-mails, notes, journals etc.) • Can be slightly less formal in your word choices, writing style, etc., but should still include proper grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling

  4. Revision—It’s soooooo important!!!!!!! • ALWAYS read through what you have written before submission • This goes for papers, letters, OGT assignments, e-mails, etc. • Drafting is an absolute MUST!! • Rough drafts allow you to catch silly errors • Print it out and read through your work with a pen in hand—helps you to SEE what you can improve • Much better than reading it on the computer (I’m speaking from personal experience here… I’ve written over 80 papers (no joke, I figured it out the other day… and that is just the FORMAL papers, excluding responses) • Reading your papers aloud prior to submission helps, too! • Your final product (what you turn in) should be perfect and polished, not dull and littered with errors

  5. Filler Words and Text Talk: They’re kind of the Devil… • “I rode the ride like 100 times!” • Why is “like” necessary? • Does it add anything to the meaning of the sentence? • When using the word “like” is appropriate • Similes • Expressing appreciation • Text Talk • Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never use Text Talk when you’re writing anything other than a text message!!!!!! • The ONLY time it is appropriate is when you are TEXTING!!! • Most common: u, lol, 2, c, idk, every1, 2day, 2morrow, etc.

  6. Spelling and Grammar are Important!! • Don’t think you need to know how to spell? Think you can always depend on spell check? • What will you do when the OGT rolls around? • What will you do on written exams in school? • Fragments • Incomplete sentence, it cannot stand on its own • Ex: “After we went to the restaurant.” • Run-Ons • Two complete ideas/sentences that have been squished together • Ex: “The boy showed us his tickets someone gave them to him.”
