Important!!! This is one of the big concepts in Algebra 1. You need to thoroughly understand this! Vocabulary: Slope – Intercept Formy = mx + b m represents the slope b represents the y-intercept y-intercept = is the y-coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the y-axis
Writing Equations When asked to write an equation, you need to know two things – slope (m) and y-intercept (b).
Writing Equations – Type #1 2 slope (m) = y – intercept (b) = 6 Write an equation in slope-intercept form of the line that has a slope of 2 and a y-intercept of 6. To write an equation, you need two things: We have both!! Plug them into slope-intercept form y = mx + b y = 2x + 6
1. Write the equation of a line that has a y-intercept of -3 and a slope of -4. A) y = -3x – 4 B) y = -4x – 3 C) y = -3x + 4 D) y = -4x + 3
Identify the slope and y-intercept: y = 3x – 7 y = x y = 5 How can I graph these problems???
Writing Equations – Type #2 3 slope (m) = y – intercept (b) = ??? Write an equation of the line that has a slope of 3 and goes through the point (2,1). To write an equation, you need two things: We have to find the y-intercept!! Plug in the slope and ordered pair into y = mx + b 1= 3(2)+ b
Writing Equations 1= 3(2)+ b (2, 1) Slope 3
2. Write an equation using the following information: (-4, -7) slope 2
Writing Equations – Type #3 Write an equation of the line that goes through the points (1, -2) and (2, 4). To write an equation, you need two things: ??? slope (m) = y – intercept (b) = ???
3. Write an equation of the line that goes through the points (0, 1) and (1, 4). • y = 3x + 4 • y = 3x + 1 • y = -3x + 4 • y = -3x + 1
Write an equation in slope-intercept form of the line that has a slope of 5 and a y-intercept of -2. • y = -2x + 5 C) y = 5x + 2 B) y = 2x – 5 D) y = 5x – 2
Identify the y-intercept:y = 7 • 7 C) 0 • Undefined D) 1
Identify the slope: y = 8x • 8x C) 8 • 0 D) 1
The y-intercept for the graph below is: A) 2 C) 2/1 B) 1 D) 0
Write an equation of the line that goes through the points (0, -2) and (1, 4). • y = 6x – 23 C) y = 1/6x – 2 • y = 6x – 2 D) y = x +4
What about an equation like this? 5x - 3y = 6What is the slope? What is the y-intercept?
