  2. Why do we estimate a quotient? • Sometimes an exact answer isn’t needed. • Six friends collected a total of 262 box tops. Each collected about the same amount. About how many box tops did each collect?

  3. When we do need an exact answer, estimating the quotient always helps us know if our exact answer is reasonable.

  4. There are 262 students scheduled to be in PE at the same time. The coach plans to teach a new game. Each group of six players will need one volleyball. How many volleyballs does the coach need so that every group has one? • Which would be a better estimate: 20 volleyballs or 40 volleyballs? • Does the coach need an exact answer?

  6. Rounding • Round 262 to 300. 300 ÷ 6 = 50 50 volleyballs is an overestimate since 262 was rounded to 300.

  7. Compatible Numbers • Substitute 240 for 262 because 24 is a multiple of 6. 240 ÷ 6 = 40 40 volleyballs is an underestimate since 262 was changed to 240.
