How do I recognize the characteristics and correctly identify different types of literature? Using the pack of cards, read the descriptions and match them to the pictures. We will check our answers in a few minutes.
Check the matching answers. • With your partner, make a list of • 3 – adjectives • 2 – action verbs • 1 – noun that describes or applies to ALL the people on the cards. We will share our responses in a few minutes.
Reading a Tall Tale • Your group will be assigned a tale tall to read. • Please read it together and complete a story map once you have finished reading. • Each member of the group must have his or her own finished map.
ASSIGNMENT • Assignment: Write a 7-10 sentence summary of your tall tale. As you write, be sure to assume that the reader of your summary does not know anything about your tall tale.
Expert Groups • We will break into expert groups to share the summaries of our tall tales. • After sharing, you and your group must make a list of the characteristics of a tall tale. • You all summarized a tall tale. • What do your stories have in common? • Write your characteristics on the paper.
The true characteristics of a tall tale • Main character is bigger than life or has super-human abilities • Main character overcomes an obstacle or defeats a “bad guy” • Main character accomplishes great feats using strength, skill, and wit • Often has a powerful animal or object that helps • Main character often dies or disappears • Includes exaggeration and humor • Explains how familiar things began or some geographical formations came to be • Hero has a colorful way of speaking

About the Real Life Article • Could it be a tall tale? • Which characteristics of a tall tale does this article have? How is it similar to a tall tale? • How is it different? • Answer, “Is this a tall tale?” Why or why not? Address both the similarities and the differences.
