Timely Declaration of Major • Upon completion of 60 units, Native freshmen and LD transfer students must “declare”. • UD transfer students must “declare” prior to 2nd semester. • Registration hold for those that fail to “declare”. • Applies to initial major declaration. • Analysis of Fall 1998 cohort: • 43% of Freshmen remained undeclared • Analysis of data from last 3 semesters: • 2% remained undeclared

GE Simplification Area C (12 units required) C1 World Civilizations (3 units) C2 Introduction to the Arts (3 units) C3 Introduction to the Humanities (3 units) C4 Further Studies in Arts and Humanities Old: Students fulfill C4 with course listed in C4 or an extra course from C2 and C3, but not C1! New: 3 units from C1, C2, C3 and the remaining 3 units from C1, C2, C3, C4

Further GE Simplification Area C: Arts & Humanities (12 units) Area D: Individual and Society (15 units) • Old: Students limited to no more than two courses from the same subject designation. • New: Restriction is removed • Helps change-of-major students • Matches requirements for transfer students

10. Major and GE Overlap Current decision must consider: • Is the course LD or UD? • Is the course a major req’t or in the major dept.? • Is the course a major req’t but not in the major? • Will the course apply GE, 9-unit upper division, Race & Ethnicity, and Writing Intensive req’ts? Solution: Not more than 9 units of GE credit from courses bearing the same designation as the student’s major.

11. Major Course can meet GE Requirement Cases: • 6 units of LD courses in major can count. • No UD courses in major can count. • UD major dept. courses not required for the major can count. • Course in the major that satisfies the Race & Ethnicity Grad. Req’t counts.

12. INFORMATION COMPETENCEGRADUATION REQUIREMENT • Determine the extent of the information needed. • Access needed information effectively and efficiently. • Evaluate information and its sources critically and use appropriately and effectively. • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose. • Understand the issues associated with legal and ethical access to and use of information.

13. The Faculty Senate further recommends Development of an implementation strategy within the following parameters: • Requirement be program-based for all undergraduate degree programs. • Require no new courses. • Reporting incorporated within Program Review. Carried unanimously

14.
