KP3: How does this help us calculate the concentration of the unknown substance? • First, we figure out how many moles of base we have (this is the number of moles of OH) • To neutralize, the # moles of OH = # moles of H • Once we know the # moles of H, we can figure out the # moles of acid
Example: 4 L of 0.5 M NaOH is added to 2L of an unknown concentration of HCl, until it totally neutralizes the acid. What is the concentration of the HCl?
KP4: Is there a formula for this? • If we know how much of the known substance it took to neutralize the unknown substance, we can calculate its concentration: MacidVacid= MbaseVbase
