MARS • Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is in the middle of all the planets.
Did you know? • Mars has two moons . It is called the red planet. • It is 128 million miles from Mars to the sun. • It orbits the sun in 686 Earth days. • It’srotation is 24 hours and 37 minutes.
About Mars • The surface of Mars is dry, rocky, and mostly covered with iron-rich dust. There are low-lying plains in the northern hemisphere, but the southern hemisphere is dotted with craters. • A very thin layer of air covers the planet. Thisatmosphere is thinner than Earths, but causes Mars to have weather, including clouds and duststorms.
MARS & EARTH DAYS ARE LONGER IN MARS THAN ON EARTH. EACH DAY LASTS 24 HOURS,37 MINUTES AND 23 SECONDS.
Is there life on Mars? • The answer to this question is that no life has been found on Mars. In recent years, NASA has sent probes, which are satellites that actually land, to explore the planet's surface. One important part of the mission of these probes has been to look for life. They take little scoops of dirt and perform a series of experiments. By looking at the way the dirt reacts in these experiments, scientists can determine whether or not there is anything alive in the sample. So far, no life has been found on Mars.
DID YOU KNOW? • Small spacecraft has beensent to Mars. • The spacecraft opens and a robot car drives out. • The car isabout the size of a skateboard. • Scientists on Earth use computers to make it move and take photos.
