Biographical Information • George Owrwell’s real name was Eric Blair. He was born in 1903 in Bengal, India. • His writing reflected socialist ideas and prophetic totalitarianism. • During the Spanisih Civil War, World War II, and in the Indian Imperial Police. • He wrote his book in 1947 and it was published on June 13, 1949. • Orwell wrote the book to warn against communism and facism. • He explained his topics and reasoning by the time he spent during the wars and in imperialist nations.

Is Big Brother Watching? • In a sense, yes, but this “watching” has been limited to simple privacy invasion. It has not been used against the people on a grand-scale according to our knowledge. 1984’s dystopian society has become a supreme authoritarian state where individual thought and freedom is forbidden, but the U.S. is simply on its way to this order. Big Brother, while he does seem to be watching Americans more and more often, he is not able to use this information to the extent that the 1984 government does
