Parallel Lines and a Transversal Objective: Students today will use the vocabulary associated with this diagram and solve problems with the angles.
Parallel Lines: Two lines equally distanced apart that never intersect. Transversal: A line that intersects the parallel lines and creates eight angles
Alternate Interior angles: Two non-adjacent congruent angles found inside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
Alternate Exterior angles: Two non-adjacent congruent angles found outside the parallel lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
Corresponding angles: Two congruent angles found on the same side of the transversal and in the same relative position to the parallel lines.
Example: Find the measures of angles A, B and C. Explain how you decided on your answers. A B 110 C mA = 110 because the angle marked 110 and A are corresponding angles so they must be congruent. mB = 70 because A and B are supplementary and must add up to be 180. mC = 70 because B and C are alternate exterior angles so they must be congruent.
