Caitlin Kenny Computers and Education Rutgers University, Fall 2008 Plastic Logic’s Thin Reader
What it is… • Plastic Electronic reader • Size of a piece of business paper (8.5-by-11-inches) Actual display area measures 10.7 diagonal inches. • Measures less than 3/10 of an inch thick and weighs less than a pound. • Supports a full range of business document formats • Touchscreen made of plastic • Durable • Virtual Keyboard
What it is… • “Users can connect to their information either wired or wirelessly and store thousands of documents on the device.” • “The reader incorporates E Ink technology for great readability and features low power consumption and long battery life.” • Plastic Logic
Thin Reader vs. Amazon Kindle • Thin Reader supports Microsoft programs, PDF, e-books, magazines, etc. • Thin, lightweight, size of a sheet of paper, 10.7 inch display • Business angle, appealing to professionals • Not Wi-Fi enabled yet • Micro-USB, Bluetooth connectivity • Material must come from Amazon.com • 6 inch display, size: 7.5" x 5.3“, thin and lightweight – some say “bulky” • More for personal use • Wi-fi enabled Which would you prefer?
Educational Purpose • Cost-effective • No more expensive textbooks! • Organization • Portability & Accessibility • Health benefits • Heavy backpacks become obsolete • The future of publishing
My opinion • Thin reader offers a better transition from books to digital readers • Size • Technological improvements • Color screen (3-5 years) • Backlight • Paperless classroom • Environmental benefit • We need details – name, price, release date.
The future…. Before And After Questions?
