(21% of U.S. pop.) live in the N.E. on 5% of U.S. soil • 40% of U.S. office space = 50 mi. w/in NYC • Highest concentration of factories, banks, universities & transportation centers • Produces 20% of nation’s GDP • Home to NYC (largest city) & Washington, D.C. (US capital)
Physical Geography • Two main regions: • Appalachian Highlands • Older mtns. = erosion • Green Mtns. = Vermont • White Mtns. = New Hampshire • Mt. Washington = NH (6300 ft. w/winds over 225 mph!) • Atlantic Coastal Plain (Piedmont/Fall Line) • Flat area w/poor soils • Piedmont w/better soils • Estuaries—Great for ports • Fall Line—moving water (energy)

Agriculture is limited in New England (rocky terrain & short growing season) • Dairy farming = most important (Vermont)
