  4. COURSE TITLE:Health Sciences Introduction • COURSE NUMBER: AHS 128 • PREREQUISITE: AHS 102 • CREDITS: 3.0 LECTURE: 3.0 LAB: 0.0

  5. COURSE DESCRIPTION • This course provides a study of the core competencies common to numerous health science professions.

  7. COURSE OBJECTIVES: • To produce caring, compassionate healthcare providers who are technically skilled and theoretically educated. • At the completion of this course, the student should have:

COURSE OBJECTIVES: • A firm knowledge base in hospital organization and healthcare history. • Understand the many different departments, employee positions, and specialties found in various healthcare facilities.. • Explain the interaction needed between all departments to assure quality and continuity of patient care

  9. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 4. Use appropriate communication skills and identify weaknesses. 5. Understand the importance of Standard and Transmission-based Precautions. 6. Verbalize the risk of contracting AIDs and Hepatitis B and C as a healthcare provider.

  10. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 7. Demonstrate patient safety and methods of maintaining a safe workplace. 8. Participate in disaster preparation and drills. 9. Understand basic first aid rationale and be technically skilled.

  11. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 10. Provide patient education concerning preventive healthcare. 11. Understand the importance of developing good employee attributes and the value of being a positive member of the healthcare team.

  13. ATTENDANCE POLICY: • When a student exceeds the maximum allowable absences a grade of "W" will be assigned. If the student is failing and past allowable absences, a grade of "WF" will be assigned. Missing 10 minutes of class, late arrival or early exit, will constitute an absence. A legitimate excuse must be presented before being allowed to makeup a missed test.

  15. ATTENDANCE POLICY: • * STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CLASS WORK. IF MAKEUP IS ALLOWED IT WILL BE AT THE CONVENIENCE OF THE INSTRUCTOR. THE STUDENTS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ARRANGING TO MAKE-UP WORK WITHIN ONE WEEK OF DATE MISSED. *

  16. GRADING SCALE: • A (92-100) • B (84-91) • C (75-83) • F (0-74)

  17. The final grade for this course will be determined as follows: • All test and the report will carry equal weight. The final exam will count as two test. • The oral presentation will be counted as a bonus on the final grade. Bonus range –5 pts. (report not given) to +5 pts. for exceptional report. • Homework = one test grade

  18. PREPARATION: • Prior to each class, the student should review the previously covered material of the last class period. Additionally, the next chapter should be reviewed, in depth, for complete understanding and class participation.

  19. HEALTHCARE INTRODUCTION REPORT • Each student is required to turn in a written report with a minimum of 450 words on any aspect of the delivery of healthcare. All topics must be approved by the instructor Students will give a two (2) minute oral presentation from their report.

  21. HEALTHCARE INTRODUCTION REPORT • ALL REPORTS MUST BE KEYED ON 8 2@ X 11" WHITE PAPER, USING A 12-POINT FONT ANDDOUBLE SPACED. • HANDWRITTEN REPORTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
