German and Soviet Cinemas of the 1920s • Focus films: Nosferatu (Murnau, 1922) and/orStrike (Eisenstein, 1924)
Neo-Realism in Italy and Beyond • Focus films: Bicycle Thieves (De Sica, 1948) and/orThe Tree of Wooden Clogs (Olmi, 1978)
Japanese Cinema: 1950 - 1970 • Focus films: Rashomon (Kurosawa, 1950) and/orTokyo Drifter (Suzuki, 1966)
Cinematic New Waves • What is a new wave in cinema? This topic allows for the possibility to engage in: • EITHER • A comparative study of films from different new waves such as A Bout de Souffle (France), Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls (Spain), Chungking Express (Hong Kong) and Festen (Denmark).
OR… • A specific study of French new wave cinema from approximately 1958 to 1965 based on A Bout de Souffle. Another Godard film such as Une Femme est Une Femme or Vivre Sa Vie may be included but note that it is not acceptable to offer only Godard films. Other possible choices include, for example, Truffaut's Jules et Jim or Tirez Sur Le Pianiste or Varda's Cléo de 5 à 7.
OR… • A specific study of contemporary East Asian new wave cinema based on Chungking Express. Another Wong Kar-Wai film such as Days of Being Wild or Fallen Angels may be included but note that it is not acceptable to offer only Wong films. Other possible choices include Chan's Made in Hong Kong or Ming-Liang's The River or Ye's Suzhou River.
Focus films: A Bout de Souffle (Godard, 1959) and/orChungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai, 1994)
Surrealist and Fantasy Cinema • Focus films: The Phantom of Liberty (Bunuel, 1974) and/or Alice (Svankmajer, 1988)
