Internet Information Server 6.0 • Included with Windows 2003 Server • NOT installed by default • Even after installing most Web Service Extensions are off until turned on • Uses application pools to isolate web services for increased security • Can still manage using IIS Manager • Can still use Front Page Extensions • Tom Steele will host an IIS-6 Session Later
Windows Scheduler • Utility • Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scheduled Tasks • Classic AT Scheduler • “at 22:00 /every:monday,wednesday,friday shutdown.exe” • New command line utility • schtasks.exe • “schtasks /CREATE /RU system /SC WEEKLY /TNn demo /TR notepad.exe”
Enabling Quotas • Network shares can be enabled to manage quotas for users • Must be an NTFS volume • Enable quota and set default space limits • Will show remaining space when user checks properties on their network shares.
Windows Shadow Copy (VSS) • Will allow save copies of files and version for document stored on network shares • User can recover their own lost file or deleted/corrupted version • Works automatically with XP and need client for 2000 or older. • The Previous Versions client is a Windows Installer file named TWCLI32.MSI. It is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Clients folder
Shadow Copy Configuration • VSC • Snapshots 100 Meg default 2/day • Client givesaccess lostor corrupt files • Rt Click on File OR Folder
What is Terminal Services • All work is done at Server. • Only Transmits Screen Scrapes, keyboard and mouse movement.
Remote Administration Services Options • Terminal Services • Remote Desktop • PcAnywhere • VNC • Citrix Metaframe • Outlook Web Access using HTTPS
Enabling Remote Administration • Click on Start • Right click on My Computer and choose properties • Click on “Remote” tab. • Check box “Enable Remote Desktop” • Click OK to Warning and then click OK again.
Terminal Services - Remote Administration • Comes free with windows 2000/2003 server. • Allows two remote connections to a server. • Non-administrators can not connect to terminal servers. • Runs as a service on the server. • Terminal services licensing service is not required for remote administration mode • Terminal Services Client or Remote Desktop Client can be used to connect to a Terminal server. • TS uses RDP (Port 3389 TCP) which can be NAT’d.
Terminal Services –Application Mode • No limit on the number of connections. • TS licensing service is required for App mode. • Runs as a service on the server. • TS Client or Remote Desktop Client can be used to connect to a Terminal server. • Terminal Server CAL Changes • Windows 2000 Sever TS v. 2003 TS • with Windows Server 2003, a TS CAL is required for each device or user using Terminal Server functionality, irrespective of which desktop operating system is running on the device.
Remote Desktop • Comes free with Windows XP. • Uses the RDP protocol the same as terminal services. Situations to use • A user or administrators can connect to a Windows XP desktop from a remote location. Limitations • Remote Desktop on Windows XP workstation cannot be used for remote control. When a user connects remotely the local session is disconnected. • HTML Option • Can run Remote Desktop Client as HTML application on an IIS server.
Terminal Services – Win 2003 • Still includes 2 licenses for remote administration. • Activated via remote access • Control Panel – system – Remote – Enable Remote Desktop • Includes updated version of User Applications Terminal Services • Not installed by default • Requires licensing and a licensing server to manage terminal service logins • Need to install applications for terminal server use • Users must be given permission or added to the “Remote Users” Group to log into TS.

Can you replace every PC with a Thin Client • NO!! • But you usually can replace between 20% and 60% of your PCs with thin clients. • If your users use Internet, Documents, Email, and one or two other core apps their workstation can be changed to a thin client.
