Place where it began… • Palestine = the hearth • Diffusion • Jews diffused out of Palestine even before Jesus was born • Jewish colonies had already existed • Antioch, Rome, Carthage, Corinth and Alexandria • Christianity first initiated through the Jewish synagogues • Saint Paul took Gospel to Jewish regions of Asia Minor & Greece • Followers of Christ were called Christians by their enemies in these regions • Many People (Jewish & non) were converted into Christians through this process • End of first century AD there were organized Christians all over • By the 2nd century- Christian communities spread • Egypt, North Africa and Gaul

  3. Where it is mainly located & with whom? Europe, North America and South America 2 billion followers

  4. Diffusion Fig. 6-5: Christianity diffused from Palestine through the Roman Empire and continued diffusing through Europe after the fall of Rome. It was later replaced by Islam in much of the Mideast and North Africa.

Major Branches • Roman Catholic: • Don’t differ expect they believe in… • The Pope, saints, crucifix, rosary, monks • Catholicism spread through missionaries and conquests • Eastern Orthodox: • 2nd largest Christian church • Greece, Turkey, Russia • Byzantine Empire • Draw themselves near to God • Protestant: • Martin Luther broke away from the Catholic church and started protestant churches • 1517 • Denominations: Baptists, Presbyterians, Lutheran, Quakerism • Church of England • Henry VIII was apart of this movement • Protestant Reformation in the 1500’s

Holy Days: • Christmas • December 25th • Jesus’ birth • Easter • First Sunday of April (dates vary) • Lent • 40 days prior to Easter • Good Friday: ending • Advent • November 30-December 24 • Days leading up to celebrate Christmas • Epiphany • January 6th • 12 days after Christmas • Remembers the 3 wise men

Conflicts • Crusades • Pope Urban II ordered knights (Christians) to travel to Jerusalem holy places converting people into Christians • Using violence • This was only the start to forced conversions only expanding when land was being taken especially from explores and conquistadors who forced the indigenous people to convert • Trail of Tears- not directly but since they forced their culture on them they were forcing Christianity on them as well

Major Beliefs: • Afterlife = resurrection of body and the soul • Purgatory • Catholic and Orthodox • Heaven and Hell • Adam & Eve • Created the world- then created man • Trinity • One god • Father, Son and the Holy Spirit • Affirmation of Faith • 10 commandments • Seven deadly sins • Trust in God and do his work
