  1. Lec: Neutralization of Acids and Bases

  2. NaOH + HCl What type of chemical is NaOH?

  3. NaOH + HCl (Base) Answer: A Base

  4. NaOH + HCl (Base) What type of chemical is HCl?

  5. NaOH + HCl(Base) (Acid) Answer: An Acid

  6. NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O(Base) (Acid) What is NaCl?

  7. NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O(Base) (Acid) (Salt) Answer: Salt

  8. NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O(Base) (Acid) (Salt) What is H2O?

  9. NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O(Base) (Acid) (Salt) (Water) Answer: Water

  10. When you add an acid to a base you make a salt water solution.

  11. Neutralization is the process when an acid is added to a base. Each particle of an acid can neutralize a base particle.

  12. To neutralize acids and bases the following equation can be used. • Concentration A x Volume A= Concentration B x Volume B

  13. You have 500 ml of an acid with a concentration of 1% and base with a concentration of 2%. How much base will you need to neutralize the acid.

  14. 500 ml x 1% = ? x 2% 500 = ? x 2% 500/2 = 250 ml Base

  15. ACID: 1% BASE: 2%

  16. ACID: 1% BASE: 2%

  17. ACID: 1% BASE: 2% If you have 1 drop of base how many base particles do you have?

  18. ACID: 1% BASE: 2% 1 Drop 2 base particles

  19. If you have 2 base particles you will need the same number of acid particles to neutralize. In this example you will need 2 acid particles to neutralize the 2 base particles.

  20. How many drops of the acid are required to neutralize the 1 drop of the base?ACID: 1% BASE: 2% ? drops 1 Drop 2 acid particles 2 base particles

  21. In order to neutralize this base drop, you would need 2 drops of the acid. ACID: 1% BASE: 2% 2 Drops 1 Drop 2 acid particles 2 base particles

  22. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 5 drops an acid?ACID: 2% BASE: 1% 5 Drops ? Drops

  23. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 5 drops an acid?ACID: 2% BASE: 1% 5 Drops ? Drops

  25. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 5 drops an acid?ACID: 2% BASE: 1% 5 Drops 10 Drops 10 particles 10 particles

  26. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 3 drops an acid?ACID: 4% BASE: 3% 3 Drops? Drops

  27. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 3 drops an acid?ACID: 4% BASE: 3% 3 Drops ? Drops

  28. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 3 drops an acid?ACID: 4% BASE: 3% 3 Drops ? Drops 12 particles 12 particles

  29. How many drops of a base are needed to neutralize 3 drops an acid?ACID: 4% BASE: 3% 3 Drops 4 Drops 12 particles 12 particles

  30. An acid has a concentration of 3% and requires 6 drops to neutralize 9 drops of base. What is the concentration of the base?ACID: 3% BASE: ?% 6 Drops 9 Drops

  31. An acid has a concentration of 3% and requires 6 drops to neutralize 9 drops of base. What is the concentration of the base?ACID: 3% BASE: ?% 6 Drops 9 Drops 18 particles 18 particles
