  2. What is adoption? • Adoption is a legal process that creates a new, permanent parent-child relationship where one didn't exist before. The adoption proceedings take place in court before a Judge. Legal process

  3. What does it cost to adopt? • Stepparent and kinship adoptions are often not very costly. Agency and private adoptions can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more depending on a variety of factors including services provided, travel expenses, birthmother expenses, requirements in the state, and other factors. International adoptions can range from $7,000 to $30,000.

  4. Some Advantages Could Include • Getting to meet the expectant mother. • Having an open adoption with the birth family. • Having the child with you immediately after birth barring any medical complications. • The possibility of being with the expectant mother during labor and delivery. • Possible pre-natal care for the expectant mother.

  5. Some Disadvantages Could Include • The cost. This could include rent, medical, and legal fees of the expectant mother. • Having the adoption fall through - emotional hurt as well as financial. • The infant being still born, which is a risk with almost all pregnancies. • The emotions connected with meeting the expectant mother. • The wait to find an expectant mother who is seeking adoption as an option. • Unethical practices of an attorney or agency.

  6. Who Can Adopt? • Almost anyone can adopt. You can be single, retired, gay, lesbian, or be of any race and/or religion. (Note: Each state or country will have its own rules regarding gay and lesbian adoption.)
