  1. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health 6th October 2010 We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health Presenter: Malcolm Ward

  2. Rationale • 4 topic focused PH Networks: Mental Health Promotion, Sexual Health, Physical Activity & Nutrition. • Variety of products inc. ‘Good Practice’ databases. Both in spec. and requested by members. • BUT Problems defining ‘good practice’ so only ‘Initiatives’ databases. • Evaluation reiterated need for ‘good practice’ examples. • Initiated Good Practice project 2 yrs ago. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  3. Why Good Practice? • Recognising/ acknowledging/ rewarding excellence. • Sharing learning (What works and what doesn’t). • Encouraging ‘evidence based practice’. (Informing & using) • Identifying (and addressing) support needs of practitioners. • Raising the bar in Wales. • “The Best is the enemy of the Good” (Voltaire) We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  4. Research • Expert Opinion – CISHE, Advisory Boards, NLIAH, WAG, SURE, European partners. • Voices from the field – Opportunistic with members at events etc. • Literature Searches – Informal initially, formally as part of MPH Dissertation. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  5. Key Findings • Global interest – across sectors. • Very little written evidence/ research. • No consensus. • Huge variation. (From highly objective research paradigm to highly subjective self selection). We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  6. Variation • Canadian Best Practices Portal (Public Health Agency of Canada) 6 step process inc. quality & rigour of research/study/ methodology with inclusion & exclusion criteria; community-based or population health approaches only; on recognised databases (CINAHL, Medline etc.); support from systematic review. • Good Practice Wales (Various partners) Original plan to have assessment panel and criteria but too challenging. Wanted to avoid alienating stakeholders. ‘Good Practice’ is subjective therefore hard to come up with criteria. Submissions vetted by staff managing the website. Disclaimer on the website! 7. Tensions • Balancing research rigour with practicality in the field. • Non judgmental – Problems with hierarchical criteria. • Engaging research community without alienating practitioners (and vice versa). • Establishing an ‘objective’ system with ‘subjective’ flexibility. • Being clear about the purpose. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  8. Serendipity • Closing the Gap – Good practice criteria for social determinants & health inequalities projects (European). Discussions with BzGA – adapted criteria. • Rebecca Weida – Final year EPH student at Maastricht, looking at ‘Good Practice’ for dissertation. 4 month internship with PHW. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  9. Pilot • 8 projects (7 completed). • Covering all 4 topic areas. • Each area with 1 national and 1 local project. • 5 telephone interviews, 1 site visit and 1 face to face interview. • Consistency checking. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  10. Good Practice Process • Identify / engage projects. • Stepped approach with 3 stages: Developing Practice. Promising Practice Good Practice. • Complete Criteria Matrix • Identify support needs and facilitate support. • Projects added to Good Practice databases. • Potential ‘Good Practice’ projects to expert assessment panel. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  11. Engagement • Completed questionnaires or enquiries to Network Co-ordinators. • Follow up phone call from network co-ordinators. • Identify ‘category’. • Add to searchable database. • Portfolio development. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  12. Developing Practice • Early stage or pilot phase that has provided descriptive information including a clear rationale, aims & objectives. Built on a tried and tested design; economical, practical, basic with a few refinements. We are the Stig! – Supporting Good Practice in Public Health

  14. Good Practice Well established with strong outcome evidence. Not only ticks all the boxes but has evidence to prove it and receives favourable reviews from the experts. Superb by name and superb by nature. Brilliantly engineered it is a big executive car for family hatchback money. Staggering value it delivers on every level.
