  4. Role of Mucous Membranes • Mucous membranes line the internal cavities that are exposed to external environment. • Mucous secreted has antiseptic properties from the enzyme lysozyme. • Traps pathogens and either swallows or expels it. Figure 2 Nasal Cavity obtained from www.sedationfacts.org
