  1. The Pythagorean Theorem Lesson 11-2

  2. c The Pythagorean Theorem a Hypotenuse Leg A right triangle has 3 specific sides: All right triangles follow this formula: a2 + b2 = c2 b Leg

  3. A Pythagorean Theorem rap… It might seem corny, but I bet you’ll remember it!

  4. Example 1 Is this a right triangle? 5 in., 5 in., and 7 in. Plug in the sides for each variable. The sides are not equal. This triangle is not a right triangle.

  5. The Pythagorean Theorem… in the movies

  6. 289 = c2Find the principal square root of each side. Find the hypotenuse: Example 2 a2 + b2 = c2Use the Pythagorean Theorem. 82 + 152 = c2Substitute 8 for a and 15 for b. 64 + 225 = c2Simplify. 17 = cSimplify. The length of the hypotenuse is 17 m.

  7. Graphing with the Pythagorean Theorem • Graph the following on a coordinate plane: (0,4) (5,4) (5,0) • Connect to make a triangle • Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the Hypotenuse a2 + b2 = c2 42 + 52 = c2

  8. Example 3 Find the height from the table to the top of the ladder: The height to the top of the ladder is 9 cm higher than 24.8 cm, so it is about 33.8 cm from the table.
