Minor Prophets,Major Message Our Winter Series at Living Water Pastor Brett Peterson –
12 Angry (Zealous) Men • A message that transcends time • A journey that will bring us into right relationship with Yahweh • A glimpse into the very character of God • A winter we will spend with some mighty men of God as we peer into their letters • A time to love, grow, and shine!
Review… • Week One – Get Zealous for the things of God! • Week Two – 1Co 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. • Week Three – Overview – Courage, Faith, and Covenant Relationship • Today – Hosea Part I
Hosea (710 B.C.) • THEME: “GOD’S UNFAILING LOVE & MERCY, to ISREAL AND THE CHURCH” (& YOU!) • VERSES: (6:6) “For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, & in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” Knowledge – intimate, experiential knowledge of God. - as in the intimate knowledge you have with someone in a marriage.
It’s all about Marriage • Hos 2:19 "I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion, 20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the LORD.
God is Faithful • Even when we are not. • Every time we sin, we have chosen to be unfaithful to the Lord! • 2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but {wanting} to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
Hosea loved Gomer. • He forgave her past and courted her • He won her heart, fell in love, & married her • They had a son together • And then she started openly selling herself again to the highest bidder. • And we, like Gomer, do the same thing to our Lord! Yet He loves us!
Ephesians 5:25-27 • Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
Rev 19:7 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.“ 8 It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9 Then he *said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'"
Do you love Jesus? • Then you KNOW Him. Experiential knowledge. • He has revealed Himself to you! • You long to stay faithful to Him no matter what the cost! • Jesus said, if you love Me, you will…
Jhn 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. Jhn 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; Jhn 14:17 {that is} the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, {but} you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Jhn 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
1Jo 2:3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. 1Jo 2:4 The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 1Jo 2:5 but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:
1Jo 3:24 The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. • Abide – live with, dwell, remain faithful
Jhn 15:2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every {branch} that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. Jhn 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither {can} you unless you abide in Me. • It begins with giving yourself totally to Jesus!
Are you being faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ? The Jews built their own kingdoms/houses but neglected God’s house/kingdom. This message is relevant today! Many churches are neglected! God’s temple is neglected!
Is it our temple or God’s? • 1Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, • 1Co 6:20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
We must grow! • Phi 3:12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. • Phi 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have attained it. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, • Phi 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Gomer didn’t grow • She married Hosea, and then continued to do what she had always done. • Israel did the same thing. • What about you? You committed your life to Jesus Christ, were baptized signifying the death of your old self. • Are you any different?
Galatians 6:14-15 • But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Gal 6:15 For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
2Cor 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, {he is} a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2Cor 5:18 Now all {these} things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,
19namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
It’s all about His Bride! • Eph 4:11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, • Eph 4:12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; • Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. • Eph 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; • Eph 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, • Eph 4:16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
For God’s temple (us) and His Church (His Bride)! • (1Co 14:12) So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. • (1Co 14:26) What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
(2Co 13:10) For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down. • (Eph 4:12) to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, • (Eph 4:29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
We must use our gifts! • 1Ti 4:13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. • 1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. • 1Ti 4:15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. • 1Ti 4:16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
1Pe 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. • 1Pe 4:9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. • 1Pe 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:
1Pe 4:11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies--in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
