  2. 1901 • Spindletop oil gusher exposes “black gold”. This allows people to start using automobiles instead of horses for easier transportation.

  3. 1902 • President Theodore Roosevelt secured the Newlands Reclamation Act. A law allowing construction of dams and reservoirs in the West.

  4. 1906 • An earthquake virtually destroys San Francisco. It set off fires that burned out 8 square miles, leaving 250,000 homeless. • In response, Congress adopts the Preservation of American Antiquities Act to protect historic sites for posterity.

  5. 1906 • The San Francisco school board orders segregation of Asian children in the city's public schools. • Japan protests that it goes against the treaty relationships.

  6. 1907 • Oklahoma becomes part of the Union.

  7. 1907 • President Theodore Roosevelt persuades the San Francisco school board to reverse its order segregating Asian students.

  8. 1909 • According to the Dawes Act. A lot (700,000 acres) of former land is opened to white settlers in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

  9. 1912 • Arizona and New Mexico enter the Union. Arizona, Kansas and Oregon give women the right to vote.

  10. 1914 • The Panama Canal is completed. It opened a new economic era in the West.

  11. 1917 • The United States declares war on Germany, entering World War I.
