  5. Confucianism – Views on Gov’t. • Government should act as an example to the people • People should follow a just ruler because proper behavior will lead to a peaceful society

  11. Legalism – View on Gov’t. • Government exists to provide clear punishments and rewards • People should accept government authority automatically • Rulers should never show emotions are trust anyone

  12. Legalism – Education • People only need to know the laws and punishments for society • Do not want people to be educated because they would challenge rulers

  13. Legalism – Contribution to Chinese Society • Loyalty to the government is the most important thing • Family loyalty is not important

  14. Daoism/Taoism – Founder & Text • Laozi • Daodejing (The Way & Its Power)

  15. Daoism/Taoism – View of Humans • Humans are neither good or bad – part of nature

  16. Daoism/Taoism – View on Gov’t. • Government should rule through non- action • Ruler should not play a role, but support the people in achieving their desires

  17. Daoism/Taoism – Education • People should focus on being one with nature • Things in nature do not strive for knowledge, just accept what comes

  18. Daoism/Taoism – Contributions to Chinese Society • Yin & Yang represented opposites • Humility • Simple life and inner peace • Harmony with nature
