  2. Information system • People • Procedures • Hardware • Software • Data • Connectivity

  3. People • Microcomputers are meant to make people’s jobs easier and more productive. • People are the most important part of an information system.

  4. Software • Software is a program. It turns data into information. • The two major kinds of software are System Software and Application Software. • System software is the software a computer uses such as: • Operating systems -(Ex. Windows 8 and Mac OS X) • Utilities-(Ex. Antivirus) • Device drivers

  5. Software continued • Application Software is the software people use such as: • General purpose applications-(Ex. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome) • Specialized applications-(Ex. Graphics and Web authoring programs.) • Mobile applications-(Ex. Text messaging and Social Networks)

  6. Hardware • Hardware is the physical equipment.

  7. Hardware continued • Microcomputer Hardware • System unit-(Ex. Microprocessor and memory) • Input/Output-(Ex. Input : Mouse, keyboard) (Ex. Output: Monitors and printer) • Secondary Storage-(Ex. Optical discs and hard disks) • Communication-(Ex. Modem)

  8. Hardware continued • Types of Computers • Supercomputers: Most powerful computer. • Mainframe computers: Capable of great processing speeds and data storage. • Midrange computers: Used to support or serve users specific needs. • Microcomputers: Ex. Desktop, notebook, tablet, handheld.

Data • Data is raw, unprocessed facts. • Four types of data files are: • Document files- Created by word processors. • Worksheet files- Created by electronic spreadsheets. • Database files- Created by database management programs. • Presentation files- Created by presentation graphics programs.

  10. Connectivity • Connectivity is the capability of microcomputers to share information with other computers. • The Internet is the largest computer network in the world and the web is used to access resources on the Internet. • Cloud computing uses the Internet and web to shift activities from users computers to the Internet.

  11. Procedures • Procedures are the rules and guidelines to follow. • Ex. Manuals.
