School of ITEE 4th year thesis/project • Library research • workshop
Objectives • Find relevant literature for your annotated bibliography/literature review. • These resources will inform your report. • Cite these sources accurately throughout your report using the IEEE citation style. • You will include the sources in your bibliography. • Consult your ECP and ITEE website for full details.
Session content • Getting started: • Library guides • Literature searching using: • UQL Search • Databases – IEEE, Scopus, Google Scholar … • Referencing: • IEEE referencing style guide • Using EndNote to create a bibliography (brief overview)
Literature review / Annotated bibliography ? • A literature review provides an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. It is presented as an argument. • An annotated bibliography provides: • A list of references presenting a brief summary of the main arguments or idea of each source. • A critique or evaluation of the source’s usefulness, reliability, objectivity or bias. • A reflection on how the source fits into your research Both provide a critical review of the literature http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/thesis
Start with a research plan • Brainstorm your topic • background reading • familiarise yourself with the topic • Make a list of keywords / synonyms (related terms) • Consider what kind of information you need • Books, handbooks, encyclopedias (background information) • Journal articles/conference papers/websites • Standards, patents, datasets
Subject guides • Relevant subject guides: • Computer science • Electrical engineering • https://web.library.uq.edu.au/research-tools-techniques/research-subject • ITEE thesis coursework guide for links to reference books, databases, websites and more. http://guides.library.uq.edu.au/iteeprojects
Information sources and search tools • UQ Library Search for books, ebooks, articles, theses • Databases for specialised research information, including standards and patents • Google, Google Advanced and Google Scholar (for websites – remember - evaluate your results)
Some relevant databases ebooks IEEE Wiley ebooks Articles/conference papers Scopus IEEE Xplore ACM Digital Library Google Scholar Standards and Patents SAI Global/BSOL; Derwent innovations index Laboratory manuals, current protocols Wiley Current protocols • Access vialibrary guide
Search strategies - using and linking keywords • “power systems” AND “wind power” AND (reserve OR capacity) AND focuses the search = fewer results but more relevant OR broadens the search = more results. Use with synonyms • Parentheses (brackets) –use when grouping keywords joined with OR • Phrase searching – use quotation marks around two or more words to search for exact match • Asterisk (*) – use to truncate a word. Eg. network*=network, networks, networking
UQL Search for a book on: “data visualization” AND “interactive data exploration” Limit to most recent publications Adjust your search to broaden it: data visualization platforms AND ("interactive data exploration" OR IDE) data visuali* platforms AND ("interactive data exploration" OR IDE) Adjust your search to narrow it: "data visualization" platforms AND "interactive data exploration“ IEEE Explore – "millimetre wave" AND "skin cancer" (few results then broaden your search) eg. microwave AND “skin cancer” , “millimetre wave” AND cancer ACM – “natural language processing” Scopus search – mobile robots Scopus author search – Search for Alex Pudmenzky. Look at their citations. Google Scholar “wave runup” laser Advanced Google show how to limit to domain search or search for document type – pdf. Example searches
Refine search results by: • Peer reviewed • Book, journal article or other content • Date of Publication
A journal article record in Scopus provides a wealth of information to further your research: • Read abstract to determine relevance and scope of article • See keywords for additional searches • View later research that has cited that article • View references and other articles related by topic
Referencing Correct and consistent use of a standard referencing convention is essential in producing a report, thesis or paper. • Referencing helps to avoid plagiarism and enables readers to locate the references you have used. • Referencing consists of: -in-text referencing within the body of your report -reference list at the end of report • Which referencing style? • IEEE numbered style, or check with your supervisor.http://www.ieee.org/documents/style_manual.pdf NB also cite accurately in your annotated bibliography. • Use EndNote (or other referencing management software) to help with referencing.
Referencing software- EndNotehttps://www.library.uq.edu.au/research-support/endnote • UQL Search • Scopus • Google Scholar • direct export • SaveReferences • Cite References • EndNoteLibrary • Word document • Websites • manual entry • Create bibliography • Bibliography using the IEEE numbered style Note:Make a copy of your document and ‘Convert to Plain text’ before submitting to Turnitin
Lynda.com • Lynda.com – software and skills training. Includes tutorials on using software applications, video, statistics etc. • https://web.library.uq.edu.au/library-services/training/lyndacom-online-courses • Go to www.lynda.com • Click Log in • Select Organization Login • Type www.uq.edu.au in organisation box • Click Go
