BSC Select Program Goals Build teams that: • Can be competitive at a high level of play • Will stay in place over a period of several years • Give the maximum number of players the opportunity to participate in playing competitive soccer
U11 Soccer Landscape • Recreational Soccer • Still an option, but • Not enough teams will exist for all games to be played in Boerne, • Means that even recreational teams will have to travel • Select Soccer!
Boerne Soccer is Part of US Youth Soccer Region III Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Louisiana Mississippi North Carolina Oklahoma South Carolina Tennessee Texas – North Texas - South Club – Association – District – State – Region - Nation
Soccer Competitive Levels • Premier (U14 +) • Division 1 • Super II • Division 2 • Division 3 (Recreational)
Division II - Competitive Introductory level of competitive play For social aspect and skill development Players selected based on skill level Generally, formed from single club Travel generally in/around San Antonio area Coaches should play each player 50%
Super II - Competitive More advanced level of competitive play Requires higher level of commitment Players selected based on talent & ability Generally, formed from broader pool Travel as far North as Temple, as far South as McAllen/Harlingen, as far West as Laredo Coaches should play each player 50%
D1 - Competitive Most advanced level of competitive play at U11 Requires highest level of commitment Players selected based on talent & ability Generally, formed from broader pool *No games played in Boerne No minimum playing time requirement
U11 Team Selection Process • BSC will form the number of U11 select teams that we have players to fill • A player’s bid will be determined by an independent “selection” committee led by Director of Coaching (DOC), based on a number of criteria, e.g. • Prior coach recommendations • Player evaluation during tryouts
U11 Tryouts • Tryouts limited to players with birthdates between Aug. 1, 1998 – July 31, 1999 • NO UNDERAGE (upcoming U10) players allowed unless specifically invited by DOC • Each player will be expected/encouraged to attend three (3) tryout sessions: • Girls: Monday/Wednesday, 7 - 8:30 pm • Boys: Tuesday/Thursday, 7 - 8:30 pm • ALL: Saturday (mini-tournament): 10-12 pm
U11 Tryouts • Preregister at www.boernesoccer.org • Bring: • Ball • Shin guards and cleats • Water! • $5 for white BSC tee shirt (must wear during tryout) • Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in!
U11 Tryouts • Trainers (lead by DOC) will design/run the tryout during M-Th sessions • Run through series of “stations” • Focus on assessment of various skills • Saturday mini-tournament • Will let DOC/trainers see how certain combinations of players “play” together • DOC/trainers can assess players on intangibles not evaluated during skill drills
“RED” Tryout Pool “NAVY” “WHITE” Outcome of Tryouts • Suggested teams, i.e. Initial team size will be limited to 8 - 10 after initial tryout to allow for additions at later tryouts
Offers • Once team/coach clusters formed, VP of Select will offer a team “bid” to each player • Parents can “accept” offer, “reject” offer, or accept offer to play on a lower level team • E.g., Players selected for Red team will be encouraged to play on Red team, but Player can decide to play on Navy (or White) team instead • Need response within 48 hours of “bid”
Parent Roles on Select Teams Coach • Role • Attends practices and games (may be on player’s side during game) • Assists trainer in conducting team training exercises/setting general tone for team • Requires completion of coaching education modules (STYSA requirement to be on sidelines) • Once teams selected, BSC will invite applicants for team coach • Committee lead by VP of Select will choose if more than one applicant/team
Parent Roles on Select Teams Manager • Role: Serves as team administrator, e.g., • Assists in coordinating team uniform order • Manages team finances • Enters team in tournaments • Coordinates with other managers on game scheduling issues • Communicates with VP of Select on game and practice scheduling • Sits on parents’ side at games • Team can choose from volunteers after teams are formed
Anticipated Time/Travel Requirements • All select teams practice 2x a week for approximately 1-1/2 hours at a time • Fall practices usually begin Aug 1 • Spring practices begin mid-Jan to Feb 1 • For S2 and D2 teams, half of team’s games will be played in Boerne, half at an “away” location • Fall schedule usually contains more games than spring season • Possible to have games scheduled on both days of any given weekend.
How We Stack Up Excludes Uniform Fees and Tournament Fees Fees obtained from club web sites.
Other Issues • Players who have previous select experience by “playing up” • All players must try out with their own age group • BSC will assign these players to a new U11 team but will not prohibit these players from trying out for their old (now U12) team • Means that some “experienced” U11 players may have option to play on a new U11 team, or their old team • Parent/player gets to choose
