Origins of Rock and Roll • Blues: A vocal and instrumental form of music based on the use of “blue notes” • It emerged from self-expression in African American communities in the US. • The blues are derived from African American spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants. • There is a real prominance of “call and response patterns” in blues music.

2 big musical characteristics of blues music… Blue Notes/Bent Notes: Flatted 3rd, 5th and 7th notes Walking Bass Line: Moving up a scale in thirds one note at a time with a flat 7th on top.

Instrumentation • Classic Rock and Roll is played with two electric guitars. • One guitar plays lead, or the melodic line of the music. • The other guitar plays the rhythmic line of the music. Usually an ostanato. • Before the 1950’s a string bass provided the bass line, this was replaced by the electric bass in the early 50’s. • There is also a drum kit. (Snare, Bass, Hi-hat and crash cymbals and tom-tom’s)
Origins of Rock and Roll • In early rock and roll, a piano was often the lead instrument, but was eventually replaced by the guitar in the mid 1950’s. • The foundation rhythm is called a “boogie-woogie blues rhythm.” • Consists of an accentuated back beat on beats 2 and 4. • This is almost always played with a snare drum.
Origins of Rock and Roll • Rockabilly: One of the earlies sub-styles of Rock and Roll Music. • Emerged in the early 1950’s • Strongly influenced by country and gospel music. • The major artist of the Rockabilly style is Elvis Presley
