Brief History of Mobile Communication Systems • 1979: AMPS is introduced in the USA • 1981: NMT is introduced in Scandinavia • 1982: CEPT creates Group Special Mobile (GSM) • 1986: Nine GSM technical proposals are presented • 1989: Digital AMPS (DAMPS) is standardized in USA • 1991: First GSM networks are launched • 1996: IS-95 CDMA is standardized in USA • 1997: 200 GSM networks, 109 countries, 44 million users • 1998: Five proposals for UMTS radio are presented • 1999: ITU-R releases IMT-2000 radio specifications Raul Bruzzone
