IB Mission Statement • To develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. • To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. • These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Diploma Program • There are over 1400 Diploma Schools in 131 countries. • City Honors was authorized in 1989. • City Honors houses New York State’s oldest Diploma Program outside of the New York City Metro area. • Diploma pass rates at City Honors are consistently higher than the NYS average.

  5. Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts. Students study concurrently: • three subjects at higher level (240 hours each). • three subjects at standard level(150 hours each). • all three parts of the core. The IB Learner Profile and the core are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme. Page 5

Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain?There are three core requirements The extended essay: • 4,000 words • Offers the opportunity to investigate a research question of individual interest • Familiarises students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university Page 6

  9. Programmes : What is the Learner Profile?It’s the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective The attributes of the learner profile express the values inherent to the IB continuum of international education: these are values that should infuse all elements of the three programmes and, therefore, the culture and ethos of all IB World Schools. IB programmes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth through all domains of knowledge. Page 9

Programmes: What is the Diploma Programme?The three IB programmes each contain four core elements Professional development Curriculum Student assessment School evaluation The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 – 19, for success at university and life beyond Diploma Ages 16 - 19 Page 10

  11. Services: What is special about IB assessment?IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability. Diploma Programme assessment includes both final examinations and internal assessment undertaken by the teacher to IB criteria and then externally moderated by the IB. All 4,000 examiners are ‘quality checked’ through a process of moderation. The IB undertakes random inspections of schools during exams. Results are published on 5 July for May session. The diploma is graded over 45 points giving ample scope to differentiate student ability Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points. University recognition: How well is the diploma recognized by universities?The IB diploma is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.   The IB works closely with universities in all regions of the world to gain recognition for the IB diploma: Direct online access for university admissions officers and government officials to syllabuses and recent examination papers A database of university admission policies on www.ibo.org Recognition in over 100 countries Recognition by over 2,000 universities Some universities offer scholarships and advanced placement for IB students Students applying to a particular university can access their grades directly from the IB’s secure web site.   13. Research on the impact of IB programs Various studies have been conducted on the performance of IB students, the standards of the IB program, the effect of the implementation of the program on a school. Results show that: © IBO 2003

  14. IB Diploma students have higher acceptance rates to colleges • The mean score of 1274 was significantly higher than the average score of the total population in 2003. Diploma candidates’ mean score was even higher than the mean score obtained by Certificate candidates. IB conducted surveys in 2002 and 2003 of students on their acceptance rates to various colleges and universities and their scores on the SAT, ACT and AP exams. IB North America received responses from 6,392 candidates from 131 schools in 29 states to our 2003 survey. © IBO 2003

The Director of International Admissions at University of Pennsylvania in 1990 found that admissions professionals at 68 of the 115 most selective and highly selective universities give preference to IB students. In 1997/98, the College of William and Mary admitted 64% of the IB Diploma candidates. In 1997, Smith College admitted 68% of the IB Diploma candidates. Independent studies by universities confirm that IB students are accepted at higher rates © IBO 2003

  17. IB has a positive impact on the culture of a school Dissertation from Oxford University included case studies on the implementation of IB at several schools in the US. As a result of IB program, schools were able to: • Raise academic standards and change perceptions towards academic achievement • Increase diversity within the school • Bring an international perspectives to the classroom and raise awareness around intercultural understanding • Improve the reputation of the school in the community © IBO 2003

  18. Other education research that supports the strengths of the IB program Each of the three programs offers a comprehensive curriculum, aligned with rigorous international standards. Studies on the performance of IB students in elementary, secondary and post-secondary education have shown that IB students: • Possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes for success in advanced courses • Perform better than their peers on various assessments © IBO 2003

  19. IB Diploma Program Advantages • Academic - students are accepted into colleges at higher rates than students who are not IB Diploma Candidates. • Economic - most IB Diploma recipients receive from 18-36 credit hours for college and sophomore standing.
