  1. Please find your child’s desk by locating his or her name tag. You will find informational papers and some of your child’s recent work at his/her seat. My little family.

  3. Communication -PowerSchool - you can view your child’s priority scale grades in PowerSchool at any time.   -My website -E-mail is the easiest way to contact me. Cantlon.christin@westada.org -You can expect a response within 24 hours M-F, between 8:00-4:00pm (If you contact me on Friday, I will respond by the next school day) -If you have not received a response from me within that time frame, please send me a follow up e-mail. It is possible that I did not see your communication. -Please keep in mind that I am working with a class full of students during school hours.

  4. Homework • At least 20 minutes of reading every day (or 140 min per week) • Grammar/Vocabulary packet assigned on Mon and expected to be finished by Thursday. • Multiplication Grid worksheet given Mon and expected to be finished Fri. Plus math facts practice! • Suggested 15 minutes Khan Academy per day • Unfinished class assignments As assigned: • projects  • study guides

Notebook Policy Notebook Writing Policy • Student notebooks are used in all subjects in our classroom. • Assigned topics as well as free writing will be done by the students. • Notebooks will be spot checked only, and not every page will be read. • If you would like to review your child’s notebooks you are welcome to ask your child to bring them home.

  6. Khan Academy Your child has a Khan Academy account already set up for my class. Students have their login credentials in their planner. Khan Academy is aligned with the standards that we will be working on this year. Students have access to tips and help videos as they practice. Our Favorite Websites

  9. Student Binder -All students will be keeping a binder organized by subject. It is your student’s responsibility to keep track of assignments. -Practice work is not included in final report card grades . -Math practice: students correct math practice problem sets. These assignments are not part of their final grade. If an exit ticket is given during that lesson, then the exit ticket will be recorded in PowerSchool. -You can view your child’s graded (evidence) and practice assignments in PowerSchool at any time. I encourage you to check your child’s progress often!

  10. 40 Book Challenge! -All fifth grade students are challenged to read 40 books or more this year! 1 book = 150 pages -Student’s choice, any genre -Students will keep track of their books on their 40 Book Challenge list, and later this year in their OneNote online notebook. -Please check your student’s book list frequently and discuss the awesome books he or she is reading!

  11. Parents and students can view current grades that have been recorded at any time by logging into power school, and clicking on each subject. I encourage you to log in often to see how your student is doing. Need help? Our wonderful office assistants can help you! Priority Standards Grading -Parents can only access student grades on Parent PowerSchool -Report cards are not available in hard copy 4.0: just beyond what is taught in class and what is well beyond what is taught in class 3.0: has both standard and learning targets. 2.0: the vocabulary and pre-requisite learning 1.0: indicates that a student needed support for partial success

Classroom Management You can help your child be successful by helping your child accept and learn from the natural consequences of their actions. • I hold all students to high academic standards. Your child’s grades are a reflection of their work. • Your child is responsible for keeping track of his/her work, study guides, and notes. • I care about the social, emotional, and academic growth of every student. Your child is the reason that I am here. • Expectations/Referral: Expectations - “LEARN” Listen attentively and be on task Earn respect by using appropriate words and actions Always come to class prepared and on time Remain in assigned area Need to keep hands, feet, and objects to self  • Referral Process: 1. Teacher and student conference with a recorded behavior 2. Teacher and student conference with a recorded behavior / Parent or guardian contact 3. Referral to office (to Principal or Vice Principal)

  13. How can you help your student this year? -Check his/her planner every day, and encourage reading, studying, and completion of all school work -School can be challenging! If your child feels overwhelmed or frustrated, remind them that struggle is often part of the learning process. Completing challenging work isn’t easy, but it is worth it! -Visit my website -Khan Academy (math practice) -practice division and multiplication math facts until all facts are mastered (student does not pause to think before answering) -HOLD YOUR CHILD ACCOUNTABLE for his/her work and behavior 40 Book Challenge -Talk about the books that your child is reading -Promote reading for pleasure at home -Read together! Your kids love to be read to! :) -Model reading for pleasure in front of your children -Visit your local library branch, or a local bookstore Visit my website often to: -stay up to date on what is going on in our class and school -for helpful resources for completing homework, and understanding difficult new concepts.

  18. Parent / Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences (student-led) will be held October 23rd & 24th this year.  This is an invaluable opportunity for you to share any information about your child that will inform my teaching. Please plan on attending your conference during this time.
